Shelley [Horror Movie Review]

Without revealing too much, Shelley is a slow-burn Danish horror film about a young woman named Elena who serves as a maid for Louise and Kasper, a wife and husband who reside in foggy isolation and cannot have children. The film takes the time to show Louise and Elena bond before Louise drops a bombshell: with eggs Louise had frozen, she wants Elena to act as the surrogate for Louise and Kasper's child.

Elena accepts, and what occurs is soulful, subtle, and jarring without the use of sharp jumpcuts. As well as that, the pregnant belly prosthetic and the blood effects are spot-on. The film does not let up on its steady composition and Gothic atmosphere, though yes, the pregnancy that causes odd symptoms and suspected foul play is well-tread ground, most notably in Rosemary's Baby and the whole concept of a terrifying birthing process in Mary Shelley's Frankenstein.

I'd recommend this to anyone who enjoys patient horror films that take advantage of atmosphere and don't give away too much.
